Should Dalmiya contest CAB polls?
The
controversy rages
The
controversy over Dalmiya’s announcement to contest the CAB
presidential polls to be held in July rages on in sports circles
of Kolkata and thanks to the active interest taken by the chief
minister of the West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in the matters
of the CAB, controversy has taken a political colour.
Dalmiya
is currently the president of the CAB and wants to contest the
elections once again. But the police commissioner of Kolkata, Prasun
Mukherjee has made his going tough by announcing his decision
to contest the post of CAB’s president.
The
chief minister has thrown his weight behind the police commissioner
and has suggested Dalmiya to keep off the elections to make way
for his successor.
Many
critics of the chief minister are criticizing him for politicizing
the whole issue. The former chief minister Jyoti Basu took strong
exception to Buddhadeb Bhattacharya’s suggestion to Dalmiya
that he should not contest the election and make way for Prasun
Mukherjee in the greater interests of the sports in the state.
Here
is an account of who said what on the issue:
The
former footballer and Mohun Bagan coach, Amal Dutta said:
“Can
you tell me what a policeman has to do with cricket? A player
has to be chosen on the basis of merit and not on the canvassing
of a police commissioner backed by a chief minister.Today we are
seeing the chief minister interfering in cricket administration
.Tomorrow he will try to do the same for football and then for
other sports .The signs are ominous.”
Chunni
Goswami, former football player and Olympian said:
“He
( Prasun Mukherjee ) is competent and intelligent but I doubt
he will be able to do justice to the CAB in view of his role as
a police commissioner.”
Former
cricketer Sambaran Banerjee said :
“He
has always has a keen interest in sports and has been instrumental
in assisting several players across the spectrum. He would usher
a new era for the CAB if elected.”
Jyoti
Basu, former chief minister said:
What
is the need for the police comnissionerr who has many other large
responsibilities to get involved in the affairs of the CAB ?”
Forward
Block state secretary Ashok Bhattacharya said :
“This
is an unhealthy development. We should not interfere with CAB’s
election to its president’s post.”
Buddhadeb
Bhattacharya , the chief minister of West Bengal said :
“Bengal
cricket is in a bad shape. No cricket match of international standard
will be played in the Eden Gardens for the next two years if Dalmiya
continues in office.Dalmiya being at the helm no budding cricketer
of Bengal will get a chance in the national team.”
